The Donkey and the Tiger
An old folk fable, retold across many lands:
A donkey said to a tiger, "The grass is blue." The tiger replied, "No, the grass is green."
The discussion quickly heated up. Unable to resolve their difference, the two submitted the matter to be judged by the lion, the King of the Jungle.
As they approached the throne, the donkey began to scream: "Your Majesty, is it not true that the grass is blue?"
The lion replied, "If you say it is blue, then it is blue."
The donkey rushed forward and continued: "The tiger disagrees with me, contradicts me, and annoys me! Please punish him."
The king then declared: "The tiger will be punished with one year of silence."
The donkey jumped cheerfully and went on his way, content and repeating to himself, "The grass is blue, the grass is blue."
The tiger accepted his punishment, but before leaving, he respectfully asked the lion: "Your Majesty, why have you punished me? After all, the grass is indeed green."
The lion replied: "The punishment has nothing to do with whether the grass is green or blue. The punishment is because it is not sensible or fitting for a brave, intelligent creature like you to waste precious time arguing with a foolish donkey, and then come and bother me with that question."
The lion continued: "The worst waste of time is arguing with a fool and fanatic who does not care about truth or reality, but only about the victory of their own stubborn illusions. Never waste time on arguments that defy common sense."
The Blindness of Ego
There are people who, no matter how much clear evidence we present to them, are simply not in the capacity to understand. Others are completely blinded by ego, resentment, and the need to be right, even when they know they are not. They are not seeking truth; they are seeking validation for their distorted views.
When ignorance screams, a wise person chooses silence. Your peace, quiet, and mental balance are worth far more than winning a pointless debate.
True strength is knowing when to walk away. It requires a conscious, inclusive mindset, fueled by observation and curiosity rather than ego. It is the ultimate sign of watchful awareness and wisdom to protect your energy from arguments that have no base in reality.
One caution the fable hides in plain sight: everyone in an argument is certain they are the tiger. Before choosing silence, test your own view with the right questions (Capsule 5). The wise examine themselves first — and walk away only after.
The next time someone drags you into an argument that defies reality or common sense — whether online, at work, or in a casual conversation — pause before you respond. Ask yourself: "Is this person seeking the truth, or are they just seeking the victory of their own illusions?" If it is the latter, choose the sensible path: remain silent, smile, and walk away. Protect your peace of mind; it is far too precious to waste.
